Lexington Tea & Brie: A Tea Room Worth Returning To
An inviting little haven in downtown Lexington, Kentucky, where thoughtful details and genuine hospitality make afternoon tea a pleasure worth repeating.

There's something particularly satisfying about discovering a new tea room in its opening days and watching it flourish. We first visited Lexington Tea & Brie during its very first week in 2024, and it was immediately apparent that this was a tea room that had done its homework.
Tucked into a beautifully restored late-19th-century building in downtown Lexington, the boutique tearoom is a confection of soft pink furnishings, delicate china, flowers, and carefully chosen decorative touches. It's undeniably pretty, with more than a little Instagram appeal. But we've visited enough tea rooms over the years to know that beautiful surroundings don't necessarily guarantee a memorable afternoon tea.
Fortunately, Lexington Tea & Brie offers much more than a pretty setting.
More Than Just a Pretty Tea Room
Owner Elizabeth came to the venture after retiring from a 26-year career in corporate America. When the opportunity arose to lease a historic downtown building, she saw the chance to realize a long-held dream of opening a tea room.
And it shows.
From the carefully selected teas to the presentation of the food, there's an attention to detail that suggests someone who genuinely understands and appreciates the afternoon tea experience.
But what we've come to value most isn't necessarily the décor or even the food, consistently good though it is. It's the atmosphere.
At first glance, all those pink furnishings and feminine flourishes might suggest a rather formal, perhaps even fussy, experience. In practice, it's quite the opposite.
On a typical afternoon, you're as likely to find a couple enjoying a quiet tea as a mother and daughter catching up or a few friends lingering over sandwiches and conversation. The surroundings may be dressed for a special occasion, but there's no requirement to have one.
That's part of its considerable charm.
Afternoon Tea, Beautifully Presented

The afternoon tea itself arrives on a charming three-tiered golden birdcage stand, with a selection of petite sandwiches, scones, and an assortment of sweets.
Guests choose three petite tea sandwiches from the menu, a detail I particularly appreciate. As much as I enjoy a traditional afternoon tea, there's almost invariably a sandwich or two in a predetermined selection that I would happily trade for something else. Here, there's no need.

The scones are accompanied by preserves and a choice of clotted cream or lemon curd, while the sweet selection provides a lovely finish. Each guest also chooses an individual pot of tea from a selection featuring Elmwood Inn Fine Teas.
For those with a heartier appetite, additional tea sandwiches can be ordered, another thoughtful option that isn't always available at traditional afternoon teas.
The menu changes with the seasons, and occasional themed teas mark holidays and other special occasions. There are also vegan, gluten-free, and children's menus, making the experience accessible to a wider range of guests.
Throughout our visits, we've found the food reliably good, the presentation attractive, and the overall experience remarkably consistent. That's no small accomplishment for a relatively young establishment.
Why We Keep Coming Back
Lexington Tea & Brie is also a popular setting for bridal showers, birthdays, and other celebrations, with larger private gatherings accommodated outside regular tea service.
But it's the quieter, everyday side of the tearoom that appeals to us most.
Elizabeth is frequently on hand, sometimes working behind the scenes and often stopping by the tables to chat with guests. She's engaging, welcoming, and clearly invested in the experience she's created.
We've enjoyed many conversations with her over the course of our visits, often exchanging stories and photographs of tea rooms we've discovered on our travels in England. It's always a pleasure to meet someone who shares such an enthusiasm for afternoon tea.
And perhaps that's the real secret of Lexington Tea & Brie.
There's no shortage of places offering attractive surroundings and an elaborate tea service. What distinguishes the ones we remember, and especially the ones we return to, is how they make us feel while we're there.
Elizabeth set out to create a place where people could escape the demands of everyday life and enjoy spending time together. From our experience, she's accomplished exactly that.
We first visited out of curiosity, shortly after the tearoom opened in 2024. Since then, Lexington Tea & Brie has become one of our favorite places to enjoy afternoon tea, and one we're always happy to revisit.
