Tea in Extraordinary Places | Glasgow, Scotland | July 2026

There is something undeniably romantic about staying in a Scottish castle, and Crossbasket Castle, just outside Glasgow, certainly lives up to the fantasy. Beautifully restored, surrounded by magnificent grounds, and offering a traditional afternoon tea in one of its grand drawing rooms, it was one of the highlights of our summer travels through the UK.

Our arrival, however, wasn't quite as leisurely as we'd planned.

We had driven up from York and arrived considerably later than expected, with an afternoon tea reservation looming. I was worried we'd have to rush straight to the drawing room, but the lovely staff assured us there was plenty of time to check into our suite and settle in before tea.

It was a small gesture, perhaps, but it set the tone for our entire stay. Crossbasket Castle may be grand, but the hospitality is wonderfully warm and unpretentious.

Afternoon tea is served in the historic castle itself, and ours took place in the beautiful Stewart Drawing Room. With its soaring ceilings, ornate plasterwork, elegant chandeliers, and large bay windows, the room has all the grandeur of a traditional British country house.

And yet, for all its formality, the atmosphere was surprisingly relaxed.

Because we'd arrived toward the end of the afternoon tea service, we found ourselves with the entire drawing room to ourselves. What might have been a disappointment at a bustling London hotel turned out to be an unexpected treat. We had this magnificent room, with all its history and elegance, almost entirely to ourselves.

The afternoon tea was every bit as impressive as the surroundings. Beautifully presented on a gleaming silver stand, the selection included generous golden scones and an assortment of exquisite little pastries—glossy, jewel-like creations, delicate layered cakes, and tempting chocolate confections. It was almost too pretty to eat. Almost.

Just as importantly, the service struck exactly the right balance. The staff was attentive and friendly without hovering, allowing us to enjoy the experience at our own pace. There was no sense of being hurried along, even though we were among the last guests of the afternoon.

In fact, if the beautiful castle grounds hadn't been calling us outside to explore, I think we could happily have stayed in that drawing room for hours, sipping tea and daydreaming.

A Castle Worth Staying For

Crossbasket Castle has undergone an extraordinary transformation in recent years. Rescued from years of neglect, the historic property was painstakingly restored and reopened as a luxury hotel in 2016. More recently, a £20 million expansion added a new hotel wing and dining facilities, bringing a fresh dimension to the estate without sacrificing the character of the original castle.

The attention to detail is evident throughout the property, which manages to feel both lavish and genuinely welcoming.

We spent two nights at Crossbasket, and I'm glad we did. Afternoon tea alone would have made the visit worthwhile, but staying overnight gave us the opportunity to enjoy the estate without feeling we had to hurry on to our next destination.

There's a special pleasure in returning to a beautiful hotel at the end of a day, particularly when that hotel happens to be a Scottish castle.

Is Crossbasket Castle Worth the Journey?

Absolutely.

We enjoyed a great many afternoon teas during our travels through England and Scotland, including some at very well-known establishments, but Crossbasket Castle was unquestionably a standout.

Glasgow is admittedly a bit of a journey if London is the focus of your UK holiday. But if your itinerary allows for a trip north, I would wholeheartedly recommend considering Crossbasket Castle, whether for afternoon tea, an overnight stay, or a couple of wonderfully indulgent days.

It offers something I particularly appreciate in an afternoon tea experience: a beautiful setting, exceptional hospitality, and the opportunity to slow down and simply enjoy being there.

And really, isn't that what afternoon tea is all about?
